WiFi Upgrade Project FAQ

WiFi Upgrade Project FAQ

What is the scope of the Wifi Project?
Technology Services is installing over 600 new WiFi 6e access points across the campus, ensuring comprehensive coverage in all buildings, classrooms, offices, and common areas. The project also includes a new wireless experience for students. Students will now have the ability to create their own wireless personal network, allowing them to connect their wireless printers, laptops, and other mobile devices securely.

What is the process for upgrading WIFI in these buildings?
The upgrade in most buildings will require the team to either change the existing access point (AP) to the new device, move it to a better location, or run additional cabling to install an new AP. During this process, it is important to know that WIRED connections will not be interrupted. Notification will be sent to users in that building via email and posted signage indicating the status of the building. Our contractor (iS3) will perform the installation with close oversight from Technology Services. Once the upgrade is complete, users must connect to the new wireless network names in that building.

How will I know when my building is scheduled to be upgraded?
The Wireless Upgrade Project main page has posted a tentative upgrade schedule. Before work is started in your building, Technology Services will send an email alerting you of the change. There will also be physical signs on the entrance of the building indicating the state of wireless in that building.

Will the network name change during the upgrade?
Yes. All wireless network names will change when the new access points are installed. Below is a chart describing the old network names and the new network names and the difference between how you previously connected and how you will connect with the new wifi6e network.

What is the MyFi Security Key?
Your MyFi Security Key is a unique key that each student will create to allow their devices to connect to the Spelman network.

Will I have to remember two networks?
During this upgrade, your devices may have to switch between the old network and new network as you move between buildings that may not have been upgraded yet. Technology Services is working as quickly as possible to minimize this experience.
